Guide and Virtual Tour of Bath: The Abbey - front entrance.
Panorama | Review | Map
The front of Bath Abbey, which is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, is a lovely soaring piece of architecture, built relatively recently as such things go Ð begun in 1611 Ð on the site of an earlier church. Since this is Bath, and so close to the pagan centre of England, it is believed there was a temple on the site before the church.
The West Front has the most amazing friezes on it, depicting ladders reaching to heaven with climbing and falling angels. This is an artistÕs impression of a dream of one of the AbbeyÕs bishops and you can quite literally stand and look at it all day and not find two figures the same. Like almost all of the buildings in Bath, the Abbey is created from the beautiful golden stone of the area and seems to glow with an inner light, even on the darkest day.
