Guide and Virtual Tour of Bath: Royal Mineral Water hospital on Upper Borough Walls.
Panorama | Review | Map
The Royal Mineral Water Hospital was built in the early eighteenth century to take advantage of the healing spring in the town. Although the Romans had been aware of the waters and what they could do, it was not until then that the whole idea of spas began to become popular. The hospital still has clinics for those suffering from rheumatic diseases and people come from all over the world.
The history of the hospital is fascinating if sometimes a little depressing, with admission to the hospital for treatment when it was first built costing three pounds Š which included your funeral if they didnÕt manage to cure you! Now, the building is one of the major landmarks of Bath and is easy to find, being behind the Baths on the way to the great shopping in Milsom Street.
