Guide and Virtual Tour of Bath: Abbey Green.
Panorama | Review | Map
Abbey Green as we see it today is separated from the Abbey itself by a road and this sometimes confuses people, but we have to remember that a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since the Abbey was built and at the time the Green really was part of the Abbey grounds. Today, although not exactly abutting the walls of the Abbey, this is still a lovely space, with a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.
A bit of folklore to take with a pinch of salt is that the tree in the middle was once used for hanging felons from, which is not likely. The rumour is that a patch of grass beneath it doesnŐt grow because of the bodies hanging there, but it is more likely to be because of all the people walking past it to see the famous hanging tree have worn it away!
